International Day of Yoga or International Yoga Day was declared by the United General Assembly on 21st June 2015 as it is one of the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. The Yoga is a traditional science that improves the mobility of the body through the usage of different asanas or poses. Yoga is gaining tremendous popularity and being religiously followed by people all over the world. Yoga as a science has its root deeply inserted in the soil of tradition and culture and emphasizes on the natural healing of the body. International Yoga Day is the day to commemorate the benefits of yoga in our life and to appreciate the existence of yoga to bring harmony and peace in our life.

Mr. Narendra Modi, honorary prime minister of India has regarded the benefits of Yoga as a scientific approach that brings harmony not only to mind and body but also between man and nature. It endows good health and mobility to the body. Yoga, being as an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition was highlighted by Mr. Narendra Modi during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. To make this day a world event, Mr. Narendra Modi along with 35,985 other participants and dignitaries from 84 other countries performed 21 yoga asanas for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. With this, the world has begun to perceive yoga as a safe and holistic science to keep oneself fit and aim for healthy life.

Benefits of Yoga:

  • Strengthens the spine:

Through its numerous asans, Yoga has the capacity to strengthen and mobilise the tissues and increase the efficiency of the spine. The yoga targets to improve the flexibility of spine by adopting various positions such as the bhujanasan or cobra pose, tadasan or tree pose, shavasan or dead pose.

  • Induces relaxation of the overall body and improves flexibility:

The various asans have a calming effect on the body. The poses causes contraction followed by relaxation of the muscles that brings about the soothing benefits to the body. It also challenges the flexibility of the muscles which research has shown has brought about beneficial effects for the body.

  • Stability in Body, mind and soul:

Overall yoga improves on enhancing and improving the coordination between the mind, body and the soul. The ailments are caused by imbalances between these three essential integrities but yoga creates a medium to connect these three areas and bring about a coordination that enhances the quality of life of the individuals.

  • Brings peace to the distressed soul:

Yoga has many psychological benefits also. With any kind of exercises, blood circulation improves and release of endorphins happens or the mood lifting hormones that improves the healing capacity of the muscles, hence yoga bring calmness to the minds of the distressed soul and accelerates healing of the bodily ailments.

On 21st June, the world also celebrates the existence of music as it marks the anniversary of the World Music Day. The world music day is celebrated to appreciate the existence of music in our life. Music brings soothing emotions into ones life. It also celebrates the life of emotions. Through music, one can express his feelings of sadness, fear, love and what not. Hence music therapy is being utilized world over for people to overcomes stress, depression and in chronic ailments. Music therapy enhances the senses, soothes the anxiety and brings about calmness in the existence of the listener.
